Bobrowski, AGH University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Foundry Engineering, Kraków, Poland Procedures have been developed to determine the volume, rate and composition (particularly BTEX: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons)) of gas evolution from moulds and cores prepared with various binders as a means of harmfulness of moulding sands. The rate of gas evolution from green sands with four diff erent lustrous carbon carrier and BTEX content were determined. The gas evolution rates are highest in the range of about 20 to 30 s after contact with molten metal. In practice during the fi rst 200-250 s the total emission of gases generated in investigated samples occurred. The main emitted component from the BTEX group was benzene.

Montmorillonite: a Comparison of Methods for Its Determination in Foundry Bentonites
Currently, approximately 70-80 % of casting production of ferrous alloys is done with sands containing bentonite (green sands). Information on an amount of active bentonite in moulding sands, after shakeout of casting, is necessary in the rebounding process of bentonite sands – under real casting house conditions. It decides how much of fresh bentonite should be added to moulding sands, thereby...
متن کاملInfluence of the Training Set Value on the Quality of the Neural Network to Identify Selected Moulding Sand Properties
Artificial neural networks are one of the modern methods of the production optimisation. An attempt to apply neural networks for controlling the quality of bentonite moulding sands is presented in this paper. This is the assessment method of sands suitability by means of detecting correlations between their individual parameters. This paper presents the next part of the study on usefulness of a...
متن کاملInnovative Developments in Sand Reclamation Technologies
Reclamation of used moulding and core sands is defined as a treatment of waste refractory materials allowing to recover at least one component of properties similar to the properties of the new component and to reuse it for casting moulds and core production. In traditional technologies of casting moulds and core production on the basis of high-silica sands with binding agent addition, the recl...
متن کاملInfluence of a Reclaimed Sand Addition to Moulding Sand with Furan Resin on Its Impact on the Environment
Metalcasting involves having a molten metal poured in a hollow mould to produce metal objects. These moulds are generally made of sand and are chemically bonded, clay-bonded, or even unbounded. There are many binder systems used. Binders based on furfuryl resins constitute currently the highest fraction in the binders no-bake group. Moulding sand, after knocking out the cast, is partially recla...

S. Żymankowska-Kumon, AGH University of Science and Technology, Kraków, Poland The article contains the results of emission BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylobenzene and xylenes) during thermal destruction (500 – 1 300 °C) of moulding sand with furan resin. This furan resin is with a high content of free furfuryl alcohol (about 80 %). Knowledge of emissions of these compounds allows the assessment ...
